It always has been observed & noticed by several organizations that female co-workers suddenly left the job due to some personal problems but when it happens nobody tries to find out the actual problem behind this scenario. Most of the time the actual reason comes out that women were being manipulated or sexually harassed by any or many co-workers. Women usually find an easy way to escape from the workplace and quit instead of fight back against this immoral act.
#MeToo Movement– #MeToo is a movement to encourage people against sexual harassment of women especially in a workplace which first introduced in 2006 in the USA by Tarana Burke an American social activist, for the sexual misconduct allegation against Harvey Weinstein. Tarana used *Me Too* phrase in 2006 which later became popular virally reached to a large number of people in 2017 as a hashtag (#) used on Twitter by American actress Alyssa Milano. She encouraged victims of sexual harassment with Michael Baker to Tweet about it and “Give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem”. This movement became a big success that not only high profile celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Uma Turman, Ashley Judd & Jennifer Lawrence but a large crowd joined; several stories of workforce sexual harassment were in use before #MeToo #MyHarveyWeinstein, #YouOkSis, #WhatWereYouWearing and #SurvivorPrivilege were Tagged stories.
Impact of #MeToo- could be easily seen everywhere & every place such as music, fashion, education, finance and even in government. The US Congress also released a bill named MeToo congress act (Member and Employee Training and Oversight on Congress Act). The purpose of the bill is to change the old system of treating harassment complaints by the legislative branch US federal Gov’t.
India Move with #MeToo– In India this movement first took place in Malayalam film industry in a rape case of a Malayalam actress who was assaulted by a group of men. The primary accused actor was Dileep who was arrested in July 2017. Before the beginning of MeToo in Hollywood in big scale, this movement also had got fire in Malayalam film industry same as MeToo. Well in India it differs from the US because this movement in Hollywood got more serious attention by the Gov’t and it turned out into a bill by US Congress. Here in India it just caught serious attention of social media and Bollywood. It didn’t reach to the right people who can change it into a bill or I should say it reached to them but they don’t think of making any amendments in the constitution because the constitution is not to change or even not to touch to change it.
Later many big celebrities posted their stories about harassment in the workplace. Here we have some names of well-known faces who shared their stories.
Tanushree Dutta, Amyra Dastur, Jasmin Bhasin, Chinmayi, Ketki Dave, Shruti Hariharan
